Aughanure Castle

As you head out on your Connemara Day Tour one of the first stops you can choose to visit could be Aughnanure Castle. This beautiful restored tower house lie approximately 3.5 km from Oughterard on the N59 towards Maam Cross. Aughanure Castle was built by the O Flaherty clan c. 1500 and stands proudly in picturesque grounds close to the shores of Lough Corrib. Aughanure Castle is a particularly well preserved example of a tower house and therefore well worth a visit. The remains of a banquet hall and a watch tower and unusually you’ll find a double bawn and bastions as well as a dry harbour.

Many of our guest who had never heard of Aughanure Castle and never planned the visit are always happy for the visit. As an OPW site there are guided tour guides who are extremely knowledgeable regarding the Castle history. The tour lasts approximately 30 minutes and guests are free to explore the Castle as they wish. It is a great photo op stop.
