The site appeared to be extremely unrealistic as it was planned on a hill in boggy countryside and the airport was thought by most to be an unrealistic pipe dream but after a long exhausting campaign the late Monsignor James Horans vision came to fruition. The primary motivation at the time was that as a service to the pilgrims visiting Knock Shrine. Unfortunately Monsignor Horan died shortly after the airport was opened. His efforts have been celebrated and a bronze statue of the man was erected by the Airport. Knock is only a quick drive to Ashford Castle and would be a very good starting point for a tour of Connemara.
